The man who killed two New York officers in their marked police cruiser in Brooklyn on Saturday has been identified as Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who had earlier shot and injured his girlfriend in Maryland before traveling to New York.

Police investigators say Brinsley had entered the apartment of his girlfriend, Shaneka Thompson, with a key he should not have had early on Saturday. The two engaged in an argument while she was on the phone with her mother. After the phone conversation ended, he shot her in the abdomen.

Brinsley then reportedly took Thompson’s phone and fled, even calling her mother to apologize for shooting Thompson. Baltimore police, who were already aware of threats against police that Brinsley had made online, tracked his whereabouts through the phone.

However, once Brinsley reached New York, he discarded the phone, which only gave authorities less than a three-hour window to figure out where he had gone before he carried out the shooting in Brooklyn.

Witnesses to the shooting of the policemen told investigators Brinsley had walked down Tompkins Avenue and approached strangers, querying them about their gang affiliations and asking them to follow him on Instagram before telling them to “Watch what I’m going to do,” moments before the attack.

Brinsley then approached officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu’s police cruiser and opened fire four times through the passenger window, killing both policemen.

Brinsley fled to the Myrtle-Willoughby Avenue subway station when he heard sirens approaching and killed himself on the platform using the same gun he had used to shoot the police.
